I've started a new seasons series! My older series was done so far apart that skill-wise they don't really go very well together. So I wanted to try another take on the theme.

Winter

So far, I have Autumn and Winter done. I had to do a commission after those, so I'm going to just be starting Spring in the next day or so. So far, I'm happy with how this new series is going! Hope you like it too!

"A Light In the Dark"

I also finished this commission in September! A gothic mermaid. I don't have a whole lot of mermaid paintings, so this was a nice one to do! :)

New Jewelry

This is a newer necklace that I've made! It has a lock and key theme and is made of all gunmetal and light blue jade beads. I really love the look of the light blue with the gunmetal!

RINGS!

I have several new rings available!! These include some new rings featuring my artwork and some in the same style but with colorful butterfly designs on them. And the newest, just listed a couple days ago, are these gothic style cameo rings with striped cabochons in them! These are so neat! They come in gray or green!

My 2012 calendar is now available!! It is a full-color spiral-bound calendar featuring 12 different paintings of mine! All of this is newer work that hasn't been in a previous calendar.

Canvas Prints

I have three Ready-to-Hang Canvas Prints for sale!! These are really beautifully printed on canvas and stretched over a frame and ready to be hung from the attached ribbon loop. The back is finished and covered with black felt.The complete dimensions are 6 x 9" with a 2 cm depth. The print quality on this canvas is incredible; it's so clear and vibrant!

These may be the only ones of these available for a while, and possibly ever, since I've decided not to print on canvas with my printer anymore. It does a beautiful job and is made to handle printing on this surface, but I don't like how my printer acts afterwards. It blobs ink and has to be cleaned, which always fixes the problem, but wastes and TON of ink. I just don't think that it is worth the risk to my printer. So I will have to find another surface for special ACEOs and maybe find another source for printing on canvas for these. So if you like these, snatch them up now because they may be the only ones!

Woodland Magic

New Version ready to paint

I'm going to share some of the progress of the painting I'm working on. I mentioned it briefly in my last post. This is a re-imagining of an older sketch. I liked the old concept, which had her as a goblin queen with a goblin king in a forest with goblins lurking about.

Old / Original Version

I don't know what happened exactly, but I just lost enthusiasm for this original concept and couldn't seem to finish the painting. But I always loved the sketches, particularly of the the queen.

So I decided to do something with her, but a bit different and in a smaller scale. Still with a lot of detail though. She had to be in a forest scene again. That is just the setting that I imagined for her all along and I couldn't imagine her any other way.

I have a lot of work still to go in this medium-sized painting (8.5 x 11"), but I'm really enjoying the process so far. I'm starting to see it's potential now, so I hope it turns out as well as I'd like! :) I'm thinking it might be called, Woodland Magic, but I'm still tossing around ideas in my head. That's what I like best so far though. Sometimes, I have a title in mind right from the beginning. Others, I try to think of it as I work. Here are some progress shots:

I put some masking fluid over the main figure and the moths and twisty stick. Then I just started filling in the background colors.

I have the basic foundation down here, so now is time to start adding the details...

Started working on the foliage, and darkening things up...

Foliage is one of those things that makes me a bit nervous to work on. I'm a little intimidated by it. I try to go by my instincts when working on it, but I'm unsure how well it will go.

I painted in the lantern and stick/pole thing...

I think it's starting to look pretty neat at this point. Now on to more foliage work...

This is my last and most up-to-date progress shot for the moment. I'll edit this post with more.
The glowy, magic moths are pretty much done, I think. Now I'm working on adding detail to the foliage... my favorite part. lol

*July 19th* The background is almost done now. The photo washed out a lot of the details and the ground isn't quite that dark. A little more work and I'll be able to start on the girl. I'm still debating on whether I should make the far background darker or leave it like it is. hmmm...

*July 20th* I'm pretty much done with the background now. I'm going to move on the painting the girl. Once she's done I can take another look at the background and see if anything needs adjusting.

I like how she turned out a lot! But then I always love working in blue! :)

Next up, I'm going to begin painting the picture to the right! This is a re-imagining of an older sketch/painting that never got finished. Originally it had a guy in the picture and some goblins, but I'd somehow lost interest in it and never got it done. But I've always loved the girl in the drawing, so I decided to take her and paint her in her own scene, which is still in a forest because that is just where she belongs. ;) I added in a lantern and some magical glowing moths! I hope that it turns out like I image! Foresty scenes aren't the easiest.
I would have begun this today if it weren't for the awful headache that I had all day! I managed to get together and mail all the orders from over the weekend, but that's the most that I could manage. Hopefully tomorrow will be a better day!

Last of all, is that I have a new-ish necklace to share! This was finished maybe 2-3 weeks ago. It's a multi-chain necklace with a silk ribbon-tie closure! With this ribbon closure, it can be worn in a variety of different lengths! It is available in my Etsy shop! (and can be gotten for 20% off if purchased in the next few days!).

"Lilac"

A Lilac Fairy! I've always loved lilacs, and I planned to do a lilac painting for a while. That's why I resisted making lilacs part of my ACEO Garden Series. I wanted to do a larger version. :)

"Cyclamen Opal Full Persian Necklace"
The cyclamen opal crystals in this are sooo pretty! They are a sort of purplely rose color. I'd say more purple though, with a hint of rose. They're a bit more purple than the pictures seem to show. I love them though, and couldn't resist using them for this necklace!

I have a TON of new jewelry for sale!!
I made a lot of new Dog Tag Necklaces! These feature many of my newest paintings. The entire garden series is currently available, ONLY these have a small matching crystal rhinestone attached to the corner of them! :)

I finally have some cameo rings available again! These were pretty popular the first time I made them, but I had trouble finding some of the parts for them. I'd been on the lookout ever since and finally got everything to make them again! :)

And just for fun, I made some other filigree rings that are topped with beautifully detailed resin chrysanthemum cabochons! These are available in a few different colors!

"From the Dark Depths"
This is my newest painting, finished earlier this week! I actually painted a mermaid this time! It is not a subject that I get inspired to paint often for whatever reason. I just don't get that many mermaid ideas. :)

I wanted her to me more of a dark mermaid, and even though she is up on the beach, I didn't want it to be beautifully sunny. So I opted for a cloudier atmosphere.

We got the kittens spayed this week, and they are now at home recovering. As it turned out, all 3 off them are girls! I thought for sure that at least Loki was a boy. Oh well, I guess we'll just have to have a girl cat named Loki, because I couldn't get used to another name at this point. lol

They seem to be doing well, except for the fact that they don't recognized each other's scent and keep hissing at each other. This also includes their mom. She hisses if one comes anywhere near her. I've heard this is common and should pass. I sure hope so!

New Art:

"Broken Halo"

This is my newest painting that I finished a couple days ago! I'm really happy with how she turned out. The billowy storm clouds in the background took the longest! Backgrounds often do take me longer than the figure to paint, maybe it's because I find the figures way more fun to paint! But backgrounds are a necessary evil. lol

I was originally going to make her wings turning from white to black, having the feathers falling out being the white ones. Like after she "fell" everything was darkening and volatile around her, as with the storm clouds building up around her. But by the time I got to the wings, I just wasn't quite sure how to successfully pull that off how I'd imagined. And I wasn't sure if it would have looked as good if I'd tried, so I decided just to go with all black instead. :)

Broken Halo WIP

A couple days ago I did a couple of quick, messy concept sketches. I almost always do these before doing my more refined sketches, just to get my composition planned out. Then I wasn't sure which I wanted to start with, the angel or the mermaid, so I asked my Facebook friends to help me decide. The majority voted for the angel, which truthfully I was leaning toward myself. :) But I fully plan on doing the mermaid soon too, if not immediately after the angel.

So I got started on the angel sketch. I worked on it for several hours yesterday. While I was working on it, I took some progress shots. While this isn't really a tutorial, I thought some would still find it interesting to see how it came together.

And I had a little visitor while I was working. Loki had to investigate what the heck I was doing! I guess he wasn't too impressed because right after this picture was taken, he began to chew on my drawing board! lol

Here is the finished sketch! The photo washed out a lot of the background detail, but I was too lazy to scan it. This is a fairly large picture, at 11 x 14" I plan to transfer the sketch tonight and hopefully get started on the painting too. I hope that the painting goes as smoothly as the sketch did. :)

February news...

I need to try update my blog more regularly. This is pretty much all of February's news in one post. lol If you want to make sure to get all my updates quickly, please follow my Facebook fanpage or subscribe to my newsletter (more about this further down).

This is my latest painting finished 1-2 weeks ago, "Absinthe" featuring, of course, the green fairy. :) I've wanted to do my own version of the absinthe fairy for a while. I hope that yo like her! Please check out the detail view on my website for a close view of her face.

The original painting has sold, but prints are available on my website. Larger 13 x 19" prints are available in my ebay store. I keep meaning to get those up on my website for most of my paintings, but that will be a large task and I haven't gotten a chance yet. Feel free to contact me if you're ever interested in a print at that size and don't want to use Ebay or you don't see the image you want there. It shouldn't be a problem for most of my artwork except for ACEOs or odd shaped ones like square paintings. They're $29.95 each.

She's also available as a tube through Dreamscape Imaging for the taggers out there!

About my newsletter... I've recently switched mailing list providers. I used Bravenet before, but I didn't like the ads in the emails I sent out, at least for the free service. I also think they went to people's spam too easily. So I found a better service with MailChimp. For those who already subscribed to my newsletter, you've already been switched over. I have some new bookmarks for sale! This is a new type of bookmark for me. These are laminated and don't come in the big vinyl sleeves. Though the vinyl ones are still available, these aren't quite as bulky. They're really beautiful, and available in my ebay store HERE. Right now I just have one of each listed available. I will be continuously adding new ones as I make them, but eventually they will become a regular item of mine. :) I may phase the vinyl ones out and replace them with these, but for now you can get both.

"Winter Magic"

This is my newest painting that I finished last night! A magical goddess of winter whipping up some snowy weather. :)

I love how she turned out! She's definitely a favorite that I've done in a while. The tree actually took the longest to do, but in the end it was worth it to add the snow on the branches. I'd contemplated just leaving them bare, but it really gave it some extra depth.

"Crimson Wings"
This painting was done for the Enchanted Visions Project for the theme, crimson wings. I took mine in a horror/fantasy direction. I'm really pleased with how she turned out! She's probably one of my favorites I've done in a while.

Kitties!

Summertime, outside

In September, we took in a stray cat. She'd been hanging around all Summer and when it was starting to get a little cooler outside she decided that she wanted to move in with us. Yes, she decided. She came in through a hole in our screen door and made herself at home. LOL Luckily we liked her so we let her stay. Isn't she pretty! :)

Of course, being a female stray... she had to be pregnant.
On October 30th, she had 3 kittens. I knew for sure that she was pregnant maybe 2-3 week before she gave birth. At least she and her kitties have a warm place to stay and plenty of food to eat, plus 4 humans that are pretty crazy about them! :) Especially Momma, Freya! We haven't gotten to know the kittens too much yet, but they get more adorable every day. They're currently 3 weeks old. We probably won't be able to keep all three kittens, but plan on keeping at least one of them along with Freya. Hopefully we can find good homes for the other 2. :) These are some of my favorite pics of her and her kittens. I haven't gotten many very good ones of the kittens yet since she has them under my bed! lol

A Few New Things...

I have some new updates to share...
First of all, a couple of new paintings! These are the next two ACEOs in my Garden series. #9 and #10 in the series. There are going to be 12 of them, so I have 2 more to go. I'm currently working on #11.

I've been playing around with more chainmaille and made a couple more necklaces. This stuff is pretty addicting! ;) These are both made in the Full Persian weave.

This first one is made with Olivine Swarovski crystal beads and bright aluminum rings and wire. It is really light weight!

This second necklace is pretty much the same as the one I posted a couple weeks ago, but this is made with black anodized aluminum rings and Aquamarine Swarovski crystal beads. Again, being made with aluminum rings makes this necklace quite light weight.

Chainmaille!
I've recently tried out making chainmaille jewelry for the first time! It's really addicting, so I can see making some more things in the future. I already have a couple in mind! :)

This was my first attempt... the Dragonscale weave. It's kind of an ambitious weave for a first time, but I saw a bracelet like it, so I had my mind set on making one. lol

My next creations were a matching necklace and bracelet! I only intended on making the necklace, but had enough supplies for a bracelet too! This was done in the Full Persian weave, with bright aluminum rings and large Jet Swarovski crystal beads! I love them and was tempted to keep them for myself! lol But I put them up for sale on Etsy. I sort of missed the vines a little in my newer design, so I incorporated them back into the design of my website. :) It looks really great on a larger monitor, since the vines don't get cropped at all. I'm satisfied with it for now. Every now and then I have to play around with my website. lol

I've actually started painting a couple of things. I started on the paintings of these sketches. It seems like I haven't painted anything in a while. I think it's been like 3 weeks. I have done some sketching in that time though. ;) Anyway, I started on the first one of this set. She's "Serenity" and the second one is "Chaos."

I'm painting them on these small 5 x 7" panels of Ampersands Aquabord (or claybord textured). It is the same thing I did my painting "Ocean of Sorrow" on. I had these two extra panels left and I wanted to use them for something, though I now realize that I had forgotten how much I really didn't like painting on it. I think the last time I used it, that since I ended up liking the end result, I sort of convinced myself that I liked working on it. lol Now I'm not really enjoying the experience so much. With the way I use watercolors, it is really hard to get the shading smooth. When I look at Ocean of Sorrow now, I wonder how I managed to get it so smooth. I'm not having nearly such luck this time.

When I paint with watercolors, I used a lot of layers to build up the colors to how dark I want them. And I sometimes scrub in some texture with a dry brush and I blend with a damp brush, and this surface just doesn't work well for all that. The color lifts off way too easily and ends up streaking like crazy! I just don't have the patience for this, so I think I'm going to finish up what I've started with acrylics. That should solve the problem. :) Then, so that the two paintings still seem a pair as I intended, I'll have to do "Chaos" in the same half watercolor/half acrylic method. It should be interesting since it isn't something I've tried before. :)

Those who have been following my eyeglasses/contacts saga are going to love this...

Now I don't have either glasses or contacts.

Yeah, so last week I had my contacts follow up... I thought I was having some trouble with them, but the doctor told me I was seeing perfectly and that he just thought they were irritating me. He told me I'd either have to get try to get used to them or maybe I'm just one of those people who'll never like wearing contacts. He told me to try to wear them for another week. Meanwhile I also had a complaint about my glasses... I could see fairly well out of them, but my left eye kept getting this strained ache in it whenever I wore them. I figured that couldn't be right. So I mentioned this last week and the doctor told me to make an appointment to have it looked at this Monday, because that's when he'd be there again (I went to America's Best (ahem worst), by the way). He never mentioned once anything about having to see him for the contacts again. He said they were sitting on the eyes right and I was seeing 20/20 out of them. What else is there to say? Shouldn't the rest be up to me whether I can get used to them and want to keep wearing them?

Anyway, I went back today for the glasses problem, and had a different doctor than the last time so he didn't know anything about what went on with the contacts, and I didn't know there was any further problem so I didn't mention it. The prescription for my left lens was changed, so I handed over both my pairs of glasses to be remade, thinking that I'd be able to wear my contacts during the week that that would take. Well at least one of my contacts is a 2 week disposable (the right one for my astigmatism is a monthly one) , and it had been 2 weeks, so I approached them about buying a box, and I was told that the doctor didn't sign off on the contacts follow up so I couldn't be sold any contacts. Trying to explain that the doctor never mentioned me having to see him again for the contacts didn't do any good. The only thing that could be done was to order another trial pair (another week to go by) and then have another follow up (another week later). So I'm sure I was red faced with anger as I said fine and stormed out. I'm pretty calm most of the time, but I'm reaching my limit with this place. I've already decided that once I finally get this all sorted out, I'm never going back there again.

I guess you get what you pay for, as the saying goes. And they're not even really as cheap as they advertise anyway, not if your glasses are anything other than basic single vision lenses. Oh, my right eye has an astigmatism... no longer am I eligible for the 2 pairs for 69.99. No, then I have to pay almost $300. None of which you know, until you are being asked to pay. I didn't even know I had an astigmatism before that. Oh and they say that you can get contacts for as low as $12.49 a box (or something close to that) but what they don't tell you is that to get that price, you have to buy a year's worth of boxes at once, which ends up being at least $100 or more depending on you type/brand of contacts.

So I'll have to squint and suffer through headaches for the next week. Hopefully this will be the last time I have to see the doctor again. This is getting so ridiculous. And you see a different doctor every time you go in there, so they never know what the other did, and you end up having to explain everything 100 times.

2 New Bracelets!

"Autumn In Copper" bracelet I finished this last week sometime. It is done in a tubular herringbone stitch in size 11 antiqued copper and dark copper metal seed beads. It is completed with antiqued copper findings, branch toggle clasp and with dangle charms made of Swarovski crystal beads and leaf and pine cone charms. It is great for the Autumn season! The beaded rope is about 8mm thick and the bracelet measures about 7.5" around. It's meant to fit the wrist loosely.

"Black Iris" bracelet

This one is a little older, but I forgot to post it here. This dark and lovely bracelet is also made in a tubular herringbone stitch with size 11 seed beads in matte black and silver-lined purple. It is finished with purple Swarovski crystal beads and then followed by a black lucite flower bead cap and another smaller crystal. Finally there is a matte black toggle clasp. The beaded rope is about 8mm thick and the bracelet is about 7.5 inches when closed.

I'm working hard on my Halloween painting! I hope to finish it in the next few days. All I have to work on is the pumpkin queen; I have the background completely done! :)

I got my newest precription glasses yesterday, and I think I may be able to get used to these. I hope. They still seem a little weird right now, but I'm hoping I'll adjust. I'm still waiting on my new contacts to arrive. I don't remember if I mentioned before about my problems with my previous 2 trial pairs. But the first time, the right contact (for my astigmatism) was all bent up when I opened the package and when I rolled it open it never regained the right shape and had a tiny tear in it. I had barely touched it, I was so gentle with it. Anyway, I had to call and have them order another one. A week later I got that and the same exact thing happened. So I am sick to death of all the problems I'm having! I called again and asked for a different brand and made an appointment to get my glasses rechecked because I didn't think that those were right either. I came in again, described my problems and got checked again. The doctor changed both the glasses and the contacts prescription again. And like I said, I got the new glasses, but I'm still waiting on the contacts. I really don't think this should have been this big of a deal. I first went and got my eyes checked over a month ago now, and I'm still not sure that they've gotten it right yet. These glasses seem better, but I'm not 100% sure about them yet. I'm starting to think that next time I may go somewhere else.

I got my new trial pair of contacts, and... one had a tear in it. So since it was the astigmatism one, they didn't have a new one available there and had to order a new one... so I have to wait another week for that. I'm getting rather sick of the whole thing. And I still need to get my glasses fixed with a new prescription for the astigmatism, which the doctor was going to write when I came back for the follow up with the new contacts. but because of the tear, that will have to wait longer too. *sighs* The new contacts seemed like they would have been the right prescription too, but the tear made things from the corner of my eye look blurry/distorted, mainly when light hit it. So pretty much nothing has been solved there yet. Fortunately, I haven't been getting so many headaches. I must be getting somewhat used to squinting. lol

My Vision Saga Continues...

Today, I had my follow up appointment for my contacts... and I had some complaints ready. I actually liked the contacts, they were comfortable most of the the time and didn't bother me to have in my eye. I liked not having to wear glasses and the absence of reflections on the lenses. But the most important thing was lacking. I couldn't see all that much better, which was the whole point. Same thing with my new glasses too. So anyway, I told the doctor all this, and she's a different one than I had the first time. After doing some testing, it was concluded that the original prescription wasn't right (which I'd basically figured out myself) but she thinks that I have a slight astigmatism in my right eye. This would really explain a lot since sometimes I thought that the new prescription was okay, and then other times it seemed blurry or out of focus.

Unfortunately, they didn't have the new prescription in stock and had to order it. So I have to wait another week to possibly see any better. I'm just hoping that I won't get charged anything to get my glasses redone with the new prescription. I mean, it isn't my fault that it was wrong the first time. I'm quite irritated with the whole thing by now. Thankfully my eyes aren't so bad that I can't do anything without my glasses, but they do feel strained quickly and I get headaches especially if I try reading without them (one of my favorite things to do!). :( I feel bad, though, because I'm not getting a whole lot of new work done. I'm working on a commission (slowly) and I want to start a Halloween themed painting soon after I'm done. I have a neat idea for that! I even have a little concept sketch done for it. :)

I did manage to finish a necklace a couple days ago! It matches the black bracelet I made before. And this one is for SALE! :) It is available in my Etsy shop HERE! I'm planning to make another bracelet to sell too eventually. It is a fun new hobby of mine! It becomes kind of addicting!

In other news, I got my new scanner today and it works wonderfully and is super fast! So I'm very happy with that. I got a Canon 8800F.

I also got a trial pair of contacts and one of my new pairs of glasses (the other wasn't in yet). I'm having a bit of trouble adjusting to my new prescriptions. I got a terrible headache yesterday from switching from my glasses to my contacts; the kind of headache that feels like a nail is being driven into your skull. Today has been a little better with the contacts. I think I may be starting to get used to them. I'm getting the hang of getting them in an out of my eyes too, which I only really had trouble with the first day. I have a follow up appointment on Saturday, so I hope that I've adjusted more by then. Otherwise, maybe the prescription isn't right.

Damn Scanner!

My damn scanner is dying! With my latest painting, I noticed when I scanned it that there is a vertical stripe that runs along the side of the scan. Fortunately, I managed to get it scanned alright by setting the painting to the right of where the stripe usually appears, but that basically cuts a third of my scanner bed off. I don't what to have to do that every time, so I'm afraid that I'm going to have to buy a new scanner. This is the same thing that forced me to buy a new one the last time. I think I've had this scanner for 4 or 5 years, but I have used it a lot! And of course this had to happen the same week that I had to pay nearly $300 for new eyeglasses and contacts. Nice. :(

Grape Twist Bracelet

I've made another bracelet! This one is a gift for my mom. I was originally going to give her the "Rose Garden" one I made, but I ended up wearing it myself. lol :) The crystal charms at the end of the dangles are actually the same color even though they didn't seem to want to photograph that way. ;)

I'm getting really close to being done with my painting (Another Ruined Cravat). I haven't taken anymore progress pics though. His shirt is taking a while to paint! It never really occurred to me that it would, but I have to build up the dark shadows and it's not going fast. I should have it done this week sometime though! The whole painting, that is, not just his shirt. ;)

I have an appointment on Monday to get my eyes examined. I need some new glasses. Actually I'm going to get contacts this time, because I hate wearing glasses. Not really for vanity reasons, I just really find them bothersome at times. It is definitely time that I went though. I got my glasses I'm wearing now when I was in high school still, and I graduated in 2002! lol

Another Ruined Cravat -- Even More Progress

I've gotten quite a bit more done on this painting! I'm liking it again! ;) Sorry in advance for the terrible photos!

<= In these first two, I painted the woman in the background, and I painted in the wallpaper pattern.

In these next two, I detailed the bed curtains, which look brighter than in these terrible photos. And in the last one, I began painting the vampire (the most fun part)! I got his face mostly done and his hands started.

"Another Ruined Cravat" -- More Progress

I've gotten some more background work done on this the last couple of days. I hate when I have to stop working on things for commissions (or any other reason). It takes me a little while to get back into working on the original painting I was working on. If I were a faster painter, I'd try to juggle working on them both at the same time, but I just don't work that way. My focus is usually on one thing at a time. But I'm starting to get some excitement back for this painting. I had such a vision for it at first that the break from it kind of ruined it for me. I think once I get more of the actual detail in, I'll be more motivated about it again.

In this next picture I went a little crazy while darkening the background and decided to darken in the entire bed curtains/floor area, with the intention of using colored pencil over it later. The entire curtains isn't quite as black as it looks in the photo. I'm still planning on making it green. After I did the play-coloring in Photoshop, I just can't see them any other way now. I just finished a commission I've been working on for a few weeks! The tiger is supposed to symbolize strength and the crystal ball looking to the future. I'm particularly happy with how her dress turned out. :)

Rose Garden Charm Bracelet

I've been trying out some beading lately, and this is something that I made. I really like it! I'm not going to sell this one. My mom liked it so much, I'm going to give it to her. But maybe I can consider it a prototype for some that I might make in the future.

These would be a little more special than my necklaces because the whole thing is hand-beaded. So I'd probably only be able to do one every now and then. :)

The beading became surprisingly quick once I got the hang of it. I made a keychain too yesterday. Maybe I'll post a picture of that later. It was actually intended to be a bracelet too, sort of like above, but I thought it was a little too clunky for that (I like my jewelry a little more delicate), so I turned it into a keychain. ;)

So I'm having some fun with some beading! I hope to have some new artwork soon! I have to finish a commission first, but I'm working on a couple things in between.

Some Painting Progress

I've been working on a commission, so I haven't really gotten a chance to do much personal work. In between waiting for replies from my client, I transferred "Another Ruined Cravat" to watercolor paper and just barely got the background started.

I think that the colors will be similar to my digital "for fun" version. I tried to think of any color scheme that I would like better, and I just couldn't really think of one. At first I thought of making the bed curtains red, but that would make the bits of blood not as poignant. My original idea for this picture was that it was the woman's bedroom and he was leaving after his, um... feast? :) But with the green, it makes the room have more of a masculine sort of feel. So I guess it is his room. What is left to wonder about is if she is capable of leaving on her own, or if a servant will have to remove her. hmm...

I finally did some more painting tonight on the gothic angel picture. I did some extra work on the perspective of the road and actually started on her skin. I'm excited to have moved on to something different from the background, though I'll have to go back later and tweak a few things. But at least I can get a little break from it. :)

Just for fun, because I was bored one night, I played around with my sketch, "Another Ruined Cravat" in Photoshop and added some quick color. This was just for fun, and I still fully plan to paint it with watercolor like always. I may even use completely different colors. I haven't decided yet. ;)

Anyone watch True Blood on HBO? The second season started a couple weeks ago. I love that show! I loved the books by Charlaine Harris, so I was really looking forward to the show. I think that they've done a really good job with it. It kind of loosely follows the books and some characters are expanded and events changed. But I kind of like that. Having read the books, it makes it so that I don't already know exactly what's going to happen. That makes it a little more exciting. :)

I'm reading Jacqueline Carey's newest book, "Naamah's Kiss." I love all her other Kushiel's books! They're among my favorite books. This one is set in the same world as the previous ones, but some generations later with new characters. I wasn't entirely sure how it would be, but I'm only about 70 pages in and I'm already really enjoying it. I should have known better since the others were so wonderful! I definitely recommend the others, and I'll probably love this one when I'm done too. :)

That is really all for now. I've started getting feedback about my book from those who've gotten theirs, and so far all is positive! I am so relieved that everyone like it! :) Now I sort of know how authors must feel on the release dates of their books. lol

The Storm...

We had a really bad storm yesterday and my power was out for about 24 hours and just came back on around 3 p.m. It was really pretty scary! Trees are down all over, including one across the street from me. It also blew our barbecue grill over, which took both me and my mom to lift back up (to give you an idea of how heavy it is). It wasn't a tornado or anything, even though the sirens went off. It was just really strong winds, like 75 mph, and crazy heavy rain. When I looked outside, it was like a sheet of white was all you could see. And since we have one particularly leaky window, we have a flooded hallway that we're now trying to dry out. So yeah, that was a wonderful day. But it could have been a lot worse, so I'm grateful.

Oh, and just a reminder that there are only 2 weeks left to pre-order my art book! ;)

"Another Ruined Cravat" Sketch

I'm still working on my other painting, but I had to take a break to do this sketch. It was one of those ideas that I had to get on paper right away. :) I quite like how this Georgian vampire turned out so far.

I played with my sketch in Photoshop to get a better idea of how I want the values in the painting to be. I was too lazy to make the sketch this dark. lol

Even More Painting Progress...

I've been working on some other things lately too, and getting the book stuff ready, so this isn't coming along as quickly as I'd like. But I think that I've finally finished the background, though this is a terrible picture of it. I had to go over all the stones again, because I didn't think they were dark enough and in the process of darkening them, all the detail was blurred. So I had to go sharpen everything up again. I also worked on the perspective a little, narrowing the road/pathway more. The depth before wasn't quite working. I hope it looks better now. I think it may be more obvious once I finally get the angel painted. Then I can tweak anything that still feels off. :)

My plans for this first shipment of books is to have them in the mail by Tuesday! ;)

More Painting Progress and Books!

Here are a couple more pics of my progress on this painting. I was originally just going to have the stone pathway that she's sitting on kind of fade around the edges in a circle around her, like in the sketch. But I didn't think that it looked right once I had it painted like that, so I extended it all the way to the edges.

In the next photo, I added the beginning wash of green for the grass along the sides of the path. I made it fade into fog in the distance. I still have to go in and detail the blades of grass, at least in the foreground.

At first, I was just thinking of creating a painting in the same vein as at Gothic Lament, but now that I'm further along it also reminds me of a couple of my other favorite paintings, Mourning Garden and Moonlight Apparition, and possibly a little Lady Death mixed in there too. :) I was going to name this "Gothic Lament II", but now with all these other influences, I'm now thinking it should have a separate title. Right now, I'm leaning toward "Benighted." For one, I was listening to Opeth while working on it yesterday and I heard the song, and also it fits the mood with its meaning: overtaken by darkness or night.

Next up, is book news....

I have received my first shipment of my books! I'm not quite ready to ship them out yet. I have to get shipping envelopes, give the books a quick look over to make sure there aren't any obvious defects or problems, sign them, and print out the Dragon Angel prints that come with them. But I'll probably start shipping the pre-orders that I've gotten soon, maybe in the next couple weeks. I'll let those that ordered one know by email when they're shipped. :) It's so neat to see this big stack of my books!!

New Glass Tile Pendants and Painting WIP

I've made seven more glass tile pendants!! I had some extra supplies that I wanted to use.

I'm also working on another painting. This is a gothic angel. I've been thinking of it as "Gothic Lament II" because it is similar. "Gothic Lament" was a small 4 x 6" painting, which is one of my favorites, but I've always wished that it were bigger. So now I'm doing something similar only larger at 8 x 12". I decided to make her an angel this time. :)

Sea Dragon and Mermaid Sketch

This is a sketch that I've been working on. I don't paint many mermaids, but this idea came to me. And I've been trying to paint more dragons too because they're my favorite fantasy creatures. I've just always been better at painting/drawing people.

I don't really know exactly what kind of colors I want to paint this yet. All I know is that it is going to be night, so it'll be pretty dark. :)

Below are some of the little thumbnail sketches that I did to figure out what pose and composition I wanted to use. Yes, they are very rough! :) I decided I liked the third one the best. It seemed the most natural to me.

Almost Ready....

I got my first copy of my art book and it is gorgeous!! But there were some things that printed a little too dark, so I had to lighten them up and resubmit it. Now I just have to see how the changes turn out. Other than that it looks perfect, and if the dark pages print like I hope this time, I will be sooo happy! I'm excited for when I get to show everyone, because I'm really proud of this collection! :)

I'm working on an ACEO now. I haven't done one of those little paintings in a while. But I'm going to do some now, continuing both my animal and dragon series. So look out for some ebay ACEO auctions and the pre-orders for my book! :)

I finished him! I'm really happy with how he turned out for the most part, though I do wish I'd noticed before I started painting that he's leaning slightly to the left. Oh well. :)

He is a new version of an older painting done in 2004. You can see in the side by side view how much I've improved since then.

I also got a cute little netbook computer a couple days ago. I still have to use my main computer for my prints and website stuff... basically anything requiring big programs like Photoshop or Dreamweaver. But this is great for the internet and I can take it anywhere. I love it! I got the Asus Eee 1000HE and it's a really great price. The touchpad and the compact keyboard take some getting used to though. :)

I'm waiting to see a copy of my artbook, and if everything looks right, I'm going to start taking pre-orders for them very soon!! Also, I finished the commissioned painting I was working on too. It was of a gothic sphinx. You can view it on my website HERE. I warn that there is some mild nudity in case you're offended by that.

Rose Garden WIP

Here is a little preview of the painting I'm working on. I wasn't entirely sure what I was going to do with it at first, that's why the roses aren't in the sketch. I got the inspiration for those after I transferred the sketch and then drew them in. I had originally had more of a golden color scheme in mind, but since I also want her to be a bit gothy, I wasn't entirely sure how to make that work with the golden colors I had in mind. So I'll save that color scheme for another time. I also thought about making it a sort of sunset/blues color scheme, but decided against it since I've done a lot of blue colors lately. Now I've decided on some more rosy colors, but a bit muted. I like them so far. :)

Here is the last in the series. I hope that everyone has enjoyed them. This is my favorite of the three, I think. I was going for that unstable green color, and I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. :)

I feel very productive since I got each in this series done one after the other. I'm usually kind of bad at series since I get distracted by other ideas. It really helped to sketch all these out first before painting them!

I finished the next one! This lightning one gave me trouble right from the beginning with the sketch. I like how it turned out, and it looks a LOT better in person than on the computer, but I think that I like the rain one better. There are still some issues with this one that bother me. I'm tempted to go back and tweak a couple of things. I may do that still...

The first painting in my series of storm goddess is complete!! I contemplated not posting it until they were all done, but I couldn't resist. lol :)

I'm pretty happy with how she turned out. I like the blue tone to it, even though I'd originally thought of it as being more grayish. It just sort of went in a more blue direction. It is funny how things like that can just happen when you paint.

This one came together pretty quickly. I really like how it turned out. I knew when I started it that it was going to be green, but I didn't really plan to make it entirely monochromatic. That just sort of happened and I'm really glad that it did. It gives it a sort of soft, dreamy look. :)

New Sketch!

This is a sketch that I've been working on for the past couple of days. I'm going to paint her next and then maybe get back to doing the third storm sketch so that I can start painting those. I haven't decided on a pose for that one yet.

This one was partially inspired by Laurell K. Hamilton's last Merry Gentry book. There was a scene in it where a vine grew into one of the guys and became a tattoo. I thought that was cool and wanted to paint something with it at some point. At first I was planning on making it a guy fairy, but I started sketching this and ended up using the idea. Oh well. :) I have to paint another male fairy soon. I haven't done that in a while... though I do still have my rat master elf guy to paint. ;) If you remember that sketch from a couple of years ago, I'm still hoping to paint him one of these days!

Little Visitors...

We had a couple little visitors today! I think the warmer weather we had today lured them out of their hiding places. It got to 50 degrees today and it was wonderful!! It's been so cold this winter!

These possums were hanging out under my brother's car and munching on some dead leaves and grass. I think they really wanted to get into the garbage though! lol They're kinda cute. The remind me of large rats but a little cuter. And they also sort of make me think of the ROUSs from The Princess Bride! I love that movie! :)

On another note, I've decided to deactivate all my prints on DeviantArt.com. So prints are available exclusively through me now, through my website and ebay store. There are a few posters on Zazzle.com too. I decided this for a few different reasons. First of all, and most importantly, is that I make more when they are purchased from me, and I can assure the quality that is being sold. I also don't really need to sell them there anymore now that I can sell my own. I originally sold them there because I didn't have any other way of producing prints of my art, but now that isn't the case. The only drawback is that I can only sell up to 8.5 x 11" prints, but if someone really wants a larger size, feel free to contact me and I'm sure something can be worked out. I've also become aware of a rule on DA about tracing, which I don't at all agree with and has several other artists upset too. They're basically allowing traced art to be posted there and if the original artist complains, then they'll remove it. It seems like it should just be against the rules in the first place. Hmm. Then there is the whole debate about whether tracing is art or not and if it is a learning tool... I personally don't see what can be learned from it but maybe someone knows something I don't. Anyway, a lot of us have decided that we don't what to give any extra money to the site, so are getting rid of our prints and subscriptions. Though I personally and going to keep my subscription because I hate browsing that site without it.

Well, that's about it. This decision probably doesn't really effect most people because I sold about 99% of my prints from my website/ebay store anyway. But I just thought I'd make it known that those DA prints are no longer an option. :)

The Storms #2: Lightning Sketch

Here is the next sketch for my storms series. Lightning! I had so many problems with this one!! It gave me such a hard time. I just couldn't seem to get everything to work together. First I couldn't draw her face and then her arm was too long! I almost gave up on it altogether! I finally decided to transfer the parts of the sketch that I did like and begin on a new sheet of paper since the other had so many eraser marks. lol. Well, I finally got something that I can work with out of it. :) I'm pretty happy with it. She has the intensity that I wanted. I may fix a thing or two before I paint it, but I'm going to move on to the next one.

I have to sketch one more and I'm going to start painting them. I thought I'd be more likely to keep up with the series, if I had them all sketched out first. :)

A Clarification: Old Art

I think that my 2003-2008 Art Progress Sheet was somewhat misleading, and that was unintentional. I obviously couldn't put all my artwork in for each year, so I was just limiting them to 5-7 of my best and favorites of each year. For late 2002 and 2003, I did such a crazy amount of artwork, that just showing those 7 images is a bit misleading to my skills at the time because those were just my best and favorites. So I put together another collage of all the old art that is still on my computer. I have a ton that isn't but it would take forever to scan it all, so I just worked with what I had. So hopefully this will give you a better idea of where I started. Many are my old digital coloring jobs! lol!
